Virtual Denim Day: Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2021

To honor Denim Day during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, FCASV hosted a display that featured denim from survivors across the state. Supporters and legislative leaders in Florida joined in by sporting their denim as visible signs of protest against sexual violence and to help spread the message that clothing does not equal consent. For more than 20 years, the Denim Day campaign has brought international attention to the issues of sexual violence. It began after the Italian Supreme Court ruled to overturn a rape conviction because they believed that since the victim wore tight jeans, she must have helped remove them, thereby implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament showed up to work in denim to support the survivor. The movement was born to address victim blaming and myths surrounding sexual violence.

Special thank you to Senator Lori Berman, Senator Audrey Gibson, Representative Anna Eskamani, Representative Felicia Robinson, and Senator Loranne Ausley for sending in pictures in your awareness denim! As a special treat, Senator Janet Cruz read FCASV’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month proclamation on the floor during Denim Day.
